The basics of garage doors

14 April 2022

At 1st Choice garage doors, we have built our reputation over two decades and have maintained our promise of providing you fair and impartial advice, whilst remaining competitive at all times.

Modern garage doors are classed as machines, these machines are usually mechanical or mechanical and electrical. They come in a vast array of designs and finishes - they are made of galvanised, powder coated steel and aluminium. Also available in PVC type material (ABS), glass fibre and of course timber (cedar being preferred due to its natural resistance to movement and rot).

Garage doors are produced to certain standard sizes, in terms of manufacturer costing. This arrangement is often confusing to the public, as doors can be made to any size should the need arise. The main reasons for manufacturer pricing increases is derived from material wastage, optimisation of manufacturing processes and factory space as well as transport in order to price competitively.

If it is necessary, then non-standard size options are available, to suit certain garage openings, though the product cost will be slightly inflated. There are also doors that can be adapted from standard options and “fitted” insitu. Please ask us for the best sizing option, in order to save money on product purchase, without compromise to the installation itself.

Garage doors are also available in several main operating types:

Up and over (canopy and retractable)
